outstanding Stirling is a historic city centred around its magnificent castle, which sits atop an extinct volcano and was once a favoured residence of Scottish monarchs. The castle played a pivotal role in Scotland's Wars of Independence, with nearby locations marking William Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297 and Robert the Bruce's triumph at Bannockburn in 1314. Visitors can explore the castle's Renaissance Royal Palace, restored to its 1540s splendour, and climb the National Wallace Monument's 246 steps for panoramic views whilst viewing Wallace's legendary battle-sword in the Hall of Arms. The city, which received its status from Queen Elizabeth II in 2002, offers additional attractions including Blair Drummond Safari Park where visitors can encounter elephants and lions, and the surrounding area provides access to Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.

very good The Dunmore Pineapple is a remarkable 18th-century summerhouse featuring a 14-metre-high stone pineapple cupola atop an octagonal pavilion. Built in 1761 as a birthday present from the 4th Earl of Dunmore to his wife Charlotte, the building originally served as a hothouse for growing exotic fruits, including actual pineapples. The structure showcases ingenious architectural features, including cleverly disguised chimneys as Grecian urns and a sophisticated heating system that circulated hot air through cavity walls. Today, visitors can actually stay in the building's converted bothies (gardeners' quarters), which offer accommodation with access to a private garden. The pineapple itself, added after 1777 when Lord Dunmore returned from Virginia, was inspired by the American colonial tradition of sailors placing pineapples on gateposts to announce their return home.
