Départment de la Marne
The Marne is the French department where Champagne vineyards producing the world-famous sparkling wine are located.
It has a surface area of 8,162 km², a population of 565,000 inhabitants, and is divided into five administrative districts (arrondissements in French) for a total of 44 cantons and 619 municipalities.
It borders (clockwise from the North) the departments of the Ardennes, Meuse, Haute-Marne, Aube, Seine-et-Marne, and Aisne.
In ancient times, the Marne belonged to the Roman Province of Gallia Belgica. In Medieval times, it was within the County of Champagne.
