I have just updated the map of modern slavery based on the Global Slavery Index. There are some interesting evolutions.

In 2018, slavery was almost completely absent from Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. However in 2023, that was only the case of Norway. The other countries still scored well, but between 5 and 9 rather than under 5.

The situation has improved in Ireland, France, Italy, Slovenia, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Greece.

It has also got better in Belarus, Ukraine, Bosnia, Albania, North Macedonia and Georgia, although much progress remains to be made in these particular countries. Outside Europe, things also improved in Morocco, Algeria, Jordan, Kuwait, as well as China.

The situation has deteriorated in Russia, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia.

But the biggest drop was surprisingly seen in the United States, which has now a score of 25, similar to Romania! According to the report, there are over one million modern slaves in the US at the moment.
