I think eye color is a bit more complicated than people only looking at DNA assume. For example all the sites that I have submitted my DNA to think that I should have grey eyes, the same as my father and younger sister. I have dark chocolate eyes like my mother and other sister.

So unless these archaeologists recovered perfectly preserved bodies with their eye color intact using DNA to determine eye color is flawed.
I think Hirisplex skin color estimates are often off as well, based off what I've seen in living samples. Results tend to usually be darker than reality.

Poimpeii paper is now
it seems they got >170 samples but narrowed it down to 12 from three sites with deep-shotgun high coverage
along with 6 separate from another site though with lower coverage
