I guess we had the fifth fatal freeway shooting in Southern California yesterday. It's an aberration, since so far none of the shootings are connected, but in the land of freeways and guns what else should we expect?

How many of these shootings are covered by the press? And I mean a full story, not just a little paragraph or two?
 
The TV press gives each a few minutes, newspapers give it a few paragraphs. Sometimes they will interview someone from law enforcement which adds a little.

Something like this happened in 1987. It seemed like there was a shooting on the freeway every day. It turned out to be a statistical anomaly- that freeway shootings ususally happen about one or two per month anyway, that one story focussed attention on the problem, and then it just seemed like they were happening all the time.

For all the other Southern Californians out there, If a green Toyota Tacoma 4 door cuts you off, don't shoot. Just "flip me off" and know that I feel really really bad about it.

I strikes me as kinda scary that the coverage is so 'another shooting yatter, yatter' and no-one seems fazed or shocked about it. It seem to happen so regularly that the people seemed to block it out. Doesn't it worry you that people have this attitude? They just let it happen and continue with their lives.

Yes, but society has become desensitized by all of it. You can't help it anymore. The media's mentality is that bad news is good news. With that, you see this stuff happen all the time on television. Americans just get used to it. As for me, I got tired of it all so that's why I don't watch television hardly at all anymore. The media just sucks that bad. :okashii:

Another shooting down by Orange County on the 55 freeway on Sunday. You have to keep driving the freeways, and there is not much you can do about it. Millions drive these roads every day, so the risk is actually minimal, but we should be shocked. We're so worried about terrorism, but not about domestic thugs.
 
I think the main problem with Gun control issues comes

down to the same basic problem as in many other American issues. The vast majority of people in the country realize there is a gun problem, and something should be done. But the only voices expressed are the advocates of total elimination of firearms on one end and on the other end the NRA who is against any limitation on any firearm. The people in the middle who have a bit of sense end up getting dragged to one end of the irretractable poles and nothing gets done. I own guns I enjoy shooting sports, but guns are horribly dangerous tools that need to be carefully regulated. The NRA courts people like me with fear saying that if we don't support the NRA the liberals will take away our guns. They haven't convinced me to join yet because I am just naturally optimistic, and keep hoping that someday there is going to be a group that supports people that have an opinion in the middle and not at either far end of the spectrum. Man's penchant for violence will always exist but a madman with a knife is preferable to one with a gun.

I'm right there with you. I served in the USMC and know first hand (having been on the recieving end of live rounds) what guns can do.

The real issue isn't guns - it's the insane lack of control. And it's not legal gun owners like you and me that are the problem! It's the lack of vigorous enforcement of the exsisting laws about guns.

If someone makes a bottle of poison accesable to a know crimminal, then the supplier will be charged as an accesory to any deaths caused by the crimminal. But if someone sells a gun illegally and that gun is used to kill someone, the seller gets a fine!

No - treat them like an accesory to the crime. What do they think the illegal gun sale is going to be used for? Compedative target practice??

Guns can be legal and safe IF people are held responsable for their use and misuse!
 
I live in California where we have some pretty strict gun laws. We also have more than our fair share of gun violence. Most of these laws were probably well intentioned, but many were media driven knee jerk reactions to the crime of the day. (For intsance we banned .50 cal BMG rifles even though they weigh 16 pounds, are five or six feet long and have never been used in any crime in the State.) Why can't we weed through all the bureacracy and funky legislation and come up with reasonable laws that actually do something? I think even the police would rather have sensible, enforceable and logical laws.

By the way, you can sell guns, but not lawn darts. I'm arming myself with lawn darts because no one will mess with me if I am carrying such a lethal and illegal object.
 
It's as bad with the more recient laws on what's allowed on a plane as what's not. I have a friend in the USAF who is allowed by law to carry a firearm while on any flight - but they confiscated his NAIL CLIPPERS!

He actually looked at the idiot and said, "Let me get this right. I can carry my sidearm with a full magazine, one inthe chamber and the two extra clips, but you think I'd attack someone with a pair of nail clippers?"

Since he was in uniform at the time and said this loudly enough so every person within 10 meters could hear him, the personel at the inspection point just waved him through. One person behind us said "I hope I'm on his flight."

I didn't stop laughing untill we got to Florida.
 
Well. last year there were 34 freeway shootings resuting in four fatalities. In the last six months there have been four fatalities but only eleven shootings. Statistically there is no spree or pattern, just the normal jacked up Southern Californian bang bang entertainment.
 
It's not outdated at all. It's important for people to be able to overthrow a government if it becomes bad. It's not bad now .. fine .. but who's to say what things can happen in the future. I'm not sitting on a rock waiting for it to happen or anything .. I'm just saying it's not outdated because the future isnt set.

We're already slowly losing our independance though. Now we HAVE to wear seatbelts. Seriously if this was 30 years ago people would be yelling but nowadays nowbody does anything. Now everybody is mad at McDonalds for providing bad food. That'd dumb. Its your choice if you eat there or not. You cant FORCE people to do stuff like that. If you wanna eat 30000 cheeseburgers it means you're stupid but it's your right. Its your life.
