For me, the Searchers is my favorite historical film. Westerns are historical.

The Duelists is very close to the top of my list as is Closely Watched Trains (even if it is perhaps more autobiographical than historical).

Rome the TV series about the life of the roman soldiers Lucios Vorenus and Titus Pullo.They took some liberties with the history, but it's a magnificent series about the end of the Roman Republic and the beginning of the Empire.
