It is very probable that preindustrial Italy had a reverse cline of absolute wealth compared to what we see today (south to north instead of north to south). The majority of silver coinage in the peninsula which has been recovered was found to be minted under the kingdom of Two Sicilies. It should be kept in mind however, that wealth in southern Italy was extremely elitist based and there was little to no semblance of a middle/guild class of skilled craftsmen such as what Northern Italy had. There was a much more stark divide between peasants and nobility so it is not as if the majority of the population was able to benefit much from its economic strength.

Maybe the regions of Italy would have been even greener on the map before the decline, perhaps.

If you go back to 1550 or 1650 then Poland would be greener than in 1750.
