Several European computers and smartphones are specialised in higher security and privacy. Here are a few examples.

Smartphones

SHIFTphone 8.1 with iodéOS

1768671417190.png

The SHIFTphone 8.1 with iodéOS (sold by NovaCustom) is a special "Privacy Edition" of the standard German-designed modular phone. It combines extreme hardware repairability with a pre-installed "de-googled" operating system that actively blocks trackers.

Here is what makes this specific version special:

1. Hardware Kill Switches

Unlike most modern phones (even privacy ones like the Pixel), this device features physical Hardware Kill Switches for the cameras and microphones.
  • How it works: Located under the back cover, these mechanical switches physically cut the electrical circuit to the sensors. When switched off, it is physically impossible for malware or hackers to listen in or watch you, regardless of software permissions.

2. Pre-Installed iodéOS (The "Google Shield")

The standard SHIFTphone 8 comes with Google services. This version comes with iodéOS, a hardened Android fork based on LineageOS.
  • Ad & Tracker Blocking: It has a system-level firewall that blocks ads and trackers in all apps (not just the browser). You can see real-time graphs of which apps are trying to phone home to Facebook or Google and block them instantly.
  • MicroG Included: Unlike strict OSs (like GrapheneOS) that sandbox Google Play, iodéOS uses microG to "spoof" Google services. This allows you to use apps like Uber or banking apps without having the actual spyware-heavy Google Play Services installed.

3. Extreme Modularity (18 Replaceable Parts)

This is arguably the most repairable phone in the world, surpassing even the Fairphone 5.
  • 18 Modules: You can replace almost everything: the screen, battery, USB-C port, fingerprint scanner, and even the individual cameras.
  • A-Frame Design: The screen is mounted on a detachable "A-frame," meaning you can pop it off without heating glue or using dangerous tools.

4. Why Buy from NovaCustom?

NovaCustom is a Dutch company that specializes in "turnkey privacy."
  • Configuration Service: If you buy this phone directly from SHIFT, you get Google. If you buy it from NovaCustom, they manually flash iodéOS for you, test it, and offer a warranty that covers the software configuration. This saves non-technical users from the risk of "bricking" their phone by trying to flash a custom ROM themselves.

Summary Specs

  • OS: iodéOS (Android 15 base, No Google)
  • Processor: Qualcomm QCM6490 (Industrial Long-Life Chip)
  • Battery: 3820 mAh (User Replaceable)
  • Updates: Security updates guaranteed until at least 2032.
Verdict: This is the ultimate phone for a privacy enthusiast who wants the "belt and suspenders" approach: software that blocks trackers (iodéOS) and hardware switches that physically cut off surveillance (Kill Switches).

Volla Phone Quintus

1768672069339.png

The Volla Phone Quintus is the first true "Cloud-less" smartphone, or more accurately, the first to integrate a Distributed Cloud powered by Holochain. Unlike standard phones that rely on central servers (like Google Drive or iCloud) to sync data, the Quintus creates a peer-to-peer network with other Volla devices to store and share data without any central authority controlling it.

Here is what makes it special compared to standard Android phones or even other Linux phones:

1. The Distributed Cloud (Holochain)

This is its "killer feature." The Quintus introduces a decentralized cloud infrastructure directly embedded in the OS.
  • No Data Centers: Your backups and messages are not stored on a server owned by Google or Volla. Instead, they are encrypted and distributed across a network of other trusted user nodes (or your own devices).
  • Data Sovereignty: This ensures that no single company can be subpoenaed to hand over your data, because no single server holds it.

2. Volla OS & Multi-Boot

The phone runs Volla OS (a de-googled Android fork) but features a unique user interface called the "Springboard" that replaces standard app icons with a text-based intelligent prediction system.
  • Multi-Boot Manager: It comes with a built-in tool to install a second operating system (like Ubuntu Touch) directly from the settings menu without needing a PC or complex flashing tools.
  • Security Mode: A dedicated physical toggle (or software gesture) allows you to instantly block apps, internet access, and background processes for extreme privacy.

3. Flagship Hardware (Finally)

Previous Volla phones were mid-range. The Quintus is their first premium hardware attempt:
  • Display: 6.78-inch AMOLED (120Hz) with high brightness (980 nits peak).
  • Performance: MediaTek Dimensity 7050 (5G) + 8GB RAM + 256GB Storage. This is powerful enough for serious multitasking, unlike the slower processors in the X23 or older models.
  • Camera: A 50MP main sensor that (while not Pixel-level) is significantly better than previous Linux phones, supporting 4K video.

Summary Specs

  • OS: Volla OS (Android base) / Ubuntu Touch
  • Battery: 4700 mAh (66W Fast Charging)
  • Connectivity: 5G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2
Verdict: The Volla Phone Quintus is the most powerful "alternative" smartphone on the market for 2025/2026. It is the best choice if you want to support a European, decentralized internet ecosystem without sacrificing modern hardware speed.

Bittium Tough Mobile 2

1768673211402.png

The Bittium Tough Mobile 2 is a Finnish-made smartphone described by its manufacturer as "the world's most secure smartphone." It is not designed for average consumers but for government agencies, military, and enterprises with extreme security needs.

What Makes It Special?

  1. Hardware-Anchored Security:
    • It contains a dedicated, tamper-proof Secure Element (separate chip) that handles encryption keys and authentication. This protects data even if the main processor is compromised.
    • Tamper Detection: If the device sensors detect physical intrusion (e.g., someone trying to drill into or open the casing), the Secure Element automatically wipes all encryption keys and data, effectively "bricking" the phone to protect secrets.
  2. Multilayered Privacy Mode:
    • A physical button activates "Privacy Mode," which instantly disconnects microphones, cameras, and Bluetooth at the hardware level, and reduces sensor accuracy.
  3. Dual-Boot Capability (Specific Models):
    • Some versions (like the "2 C" variant) can run two completely separate operating systems: a standard Android OS for personal use and a hardened, secure OS for confidential work, fully isolated from each other.
  4. Durability:
    • Despite looking sleek, it is MIL-STD-810G certified for shock/drop resistance and IP67 rated for water/dust resistance.

Computers

NovaCustom laptops

1768672511342.png

NovaCustom is a niche Dutch laptop manufacturer that distinguishes itself through firmware transparency and security. While most laptops run proprietary "black box" BIOS software (usually from vendors like Insyde or AMI), NovaCustom completely replaces this with open-source firmware.

Here is what makes them special compared to mainstream brands (like Dell or Lenovo) and even other Linux laptop vendors:

1. Dasharo Coreboot Firmware (The "Secret Sauce")

The most unique feature of a NovaCustom laptop is that it ships with Dasharo, a maintained distribution of coreboot.
  • Why this matters: Standard BIOS firmware is closed-source; you cannot see what it does or if it has backdoors. NovaCustom's firmware is open-source, allowing for full auditing.
  • Performance: It is significantly lighter than standard UEFI, leading to faster boot times.
  • Updates: They guarantee 5 years of firmware security updates, which is rare for consumer laptops.

2. Advanced Privacy & Security

Because they control the firmware, NovaCustom offers security features that are impossible on standard laptops:
  • Intel ME Disabling: You can order the laptop with the Intel Management Engine (ME) disabled or neutralized. The ME is a controversial subsystem inside Intel processors that has deep system access; privacy advocates often view it as a potential backdoor.
  • Tamper Evidence: They support Heads, a security payload that can detect if someone has physically tampered with your laptop's hardware or firmware while you were away (often used with a USB security key like a Librem Key).
  • Qubes OS Certification: The NV41 series is certified for Qubes OS, an operating system used by journalists and security experts. This requires specific hardware capabilities (like correct IOMMU grouping) that NovaCustom specifically validates.

3. Linux-First Optimization

Unlike major brands that treat Linux as an afterthought, NovaCustom tunes the hardware specifically for it:
  • Fan Curves: They adjusted the fan behavior in the firmware to be quieter and less annoying than the default profiles found on similar chassis.
  • S3 Sleep: They restored "S3 Suspend" (deep sleep), a feature many modern laptops have removed in favor of "Modern Standby" (which often drains battery on Linux). This makes their laptops much more reliable for Linux users who want to close the lid and not lose 20% battery overnight.

4. Right to Repair

While not as modular as the Framework Laptop, NovaCustom is highly repairable:
  • Spare Parts: They commit to supplying spare parts for 7 years after purchase.
  • Manuals: They provide detailed video tutorials for replacing virtually every component, including the screen and keyboard.

SHIFT13mi Laptop/tablet

1768672246730.png

The SHIFT13mi (often styled as the "Shiftbook" or "SHIFTbook" in newer contexts) is a "tabtop"—a modular 2-in-1 detachable computer produced by the German company SHIFT. It is designed around the principles of sustainability, repairability, and modularity, distinguishing it significantly from standard consumer laptops like the Surface Pro.

Key Special Features

  • Modular Design & Repairability: The device is built to be easily opened and repaired. It features a user-replaceable battery and two M.2 SSD slots for storage expansion. While the CPU and RAM are soldered (a common necessity for tablet form factors), the manufacturer offers a "mainboard swap" program to upgrade core components later.
  • "TouchOnKeys" Keyboard: The detachable keyboard (SHIFTkeys) is unique because the entire keyboard surface functions as a large multi-touch trackpad. Users can type and gesture on the same surface without needing a separate touchpad area below the keys.
  • Hardware Kill Switches: For privacy-conscious users, it includes physical hardware switches to mechanically disconnect the camera and microphone, as well as a switch to disable the internal fan for silent operation.
  • Sustainability Deposit: Like other SHIFT products, the device includes a device deposit (Pfand) in its price, which is refunded when you return the device at the end of its life for recycling.
  • Connectivity: It includes two Thunderbolt 4 ports (USB-C) for high-speed data and eGPU support, alongside standard USB-C ports, but lacks legacy ports like USB-A or HDMI without an adapter.

Quick Specs (Bundle)

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 (11th Gen Tiger Lake)
  • Display: 13.3-inch Full HD touch display (1920x1080)
  • Memory: 16GB or 32GB LPDDR4x (Soldered)
  • OS: Available with Windows 10/11 or Linux (often Ubuntu)
This device targets users who prioritize ethical manufacturing and longevity over having the thinnest or lightest possible device.

Here are a few advanced smartwatches made in Europe.

Polar smartwatches

1768674456204.png

Polar is a Finnish company that is the original inventor of the wireless heart rate monitor (1977). Unlike competitors that started as GPS companies (Garmin) or tech giants (Apple), Polar's entire DNA is built around cardiological science and sports physiology.

Here is what makes Polar smartwatches special:

1. The "Gold Standard" of Heart Rate Tracking

Polar is widely respected in the medical and scientific community as the benchmark for heart rate accuracy.
  • Precision Focus: While many brands smooth out heart rate data to make it look "pretty," Polar watches (and especially their H10 chest straps, which integrate seamlessly) provide raw, scientifically validated data that professional sports teams rely on.
  • Elixir™ Biosensing: Their newest flagship models (Vantage V3, Grit X2 Pro) feature "Elixir," a sensor fusion technology that measures significantly more than just heart rate. It combines Optical Heart Rate (Gen 4), SpO2, Skin Temperature, and Wrist-ECG to give a complete physiological picture.

2. Recovery-First Philosophy

Most smartwatches push you to "close your rings" or hit 10,000 steps every day regardless of how tired you are. Polar is unique because it tells you when not to train.
  • Nightly Recharge™: This feature measures your autonomic nervous system (ANS) recovery overnight. It doesn't just track sleep stages; it measures beat-to-beat heart rate variability (HRV) to tell you if your nervous system is actually recovered from yesterday's stress or training.
  • Leg Recovery Test: Some high-end models feature a guided jump test to measure leg muscle recovery without needing external sensors, telling you if your neuromuscular system is ready for speed or strength work.

3. Polar Flow (Data Ecosystem)

The companion app, Polar Flow, is arguably the most detailed free training platform available.
  • Coach Access: It allows you to give your real-life coach access to your data so they can plan your training remotely.
  • Season Planning: It includes sophisticated tools for planning an entire season of training (Macrocycles and Mesocycles), which is overkill for average users but essential for competitive athletes.

4. No "Paywall"

Unlike Fitbit (Google) or Oura, which require a monthly subscription to see your detailed historical data or "readiness" scores, Polar Flow is completely free. You buy the hardware, and you own your data and the analysis forever.

Suunto smartwatches

1768674074776.png

Suunto smartwatches occupy a unique niche between standard fitness trackers and professional outdoor tools. While brands like Garmin dominate the mass market, Suunto (a Finnish company) is prized by mountaineers, divers, and ultra-endurance athletes for its reliability and specific focus on vertical sports.

Here is what makes Suunto special:

1. Heritage in Precision Instruments

Suunto started in 1936 by inventing liquid-filled field compasses. This DNA is still evident: their watches are often considered "wrist computers" for navigation rather than just smartwatches.
  • Dive Integration: Uniquely, Suunto is also a leader in scuba dive computers. Their high-end watches (like the Suunto Ocean) function as fully certified dive computers with tank pressure integration, something almost no other mainstream smartwatch offers.

2. "Vertical" Focus & Offline Maps

As the name of their flagship model (Suunto Vertical 2) suggests, these watches are built for elevation.
  • Best-in-Class Offline Maps: They offer free, globally downloadable topographic maps that are stored on the watch (32GB storage). Reviewers often cite these as more legible and high-contrast than competitors, with three distinct map styles (Outdoor, High Contrast, Dark) designed specifically for visibility in harsh conditions.
  • Dual-Band GPS: They use advanced dual-frequency GNSS (L1 + L5) to maintain accuracy even in "canyons" (urban or natural) where signal is typically lost.

3. Extreme Durability & Repairability

Suunto prioritizes longevity over planned obsolescence.
  • Repairability: Unlike many modern wearables that are glued shut, Suunto designs its devices to be opened and repaired. They maintain a service network that repairs devices up to 8-10 years old, often fixing 90% of returned units rather than replacing them.
  • Made in Finland: Many of their premium models are still manufactured in their own factory in Vantaa, Finland, running on 100% renewable energy.

4. Battery Philosophy

Suunto watches are famous for their "Tour Mode" and intelligent battery management.
  • Intelligent Battery Modes: Before you start a hike, the watch tells you exactly how many hours the battery will last in current mode. If you run low mid-activity, it suggests switching to a lower-power mode (e.g., "Tour Mode" with 250+ hours of tracking) without stopping the recording.
  • Real-World Endurance: The Vertical 2, for example, offers up to 60 hours of tracking even with the most accurate dual-band GPS enabled, allowing for multi-day ultra-marathons without charging.

Comparison: Suunto Vertical 2 vs. Race 2 vs. 9 Peak Pro

Here is a comparison of the Suunto Vertical 2 (Flagship Adventure), Suunto Race 2 (Performance Training), and the older Suunto 9 Peak Pro (Compact Multisport).

Quick Summary

  • Suunto Vertical 2: The ultimate "expedition tool." Buy this if you need maximum battery life, extreme durability, and the best offline mapping experience for multi-day adventures. It now features an AMOLED screen (like the Race) but retains a more rugged build.
  • Suunto Race 2: The "performance athlete" choice. It has a similar AMOLED screen and features but is slightly less rugged (lighter build, no solar option) and optimized for daily training and racing rather than weeks off-grid.
  • Suunto 9 Peak Pro: The "compact" choice. Significantly smaller and lighter than the others. It lacks offline maps and the new AMOLED screen (uses older LCD), but it is ultra-thin and tough. Choose this if the other two are too bulky for your wrist.

Key Differences Explained

1. Display & Maps
The Vertical 2 and Race 2 both now feature bright, high-resolution AMOLED screens, a massive upgrade from the duller LCDs of the past. Both support full offline topographic maps.
The 9 Peak Pro is a generation behind; it uses a small, lower-resolution LCD screen and does not support map visuals—it only shows a "breadcrumb" line on a blank background for navigation.

2. Battery Life
The Vertical 2 is the king of endurance. It offers 65 hours of tracking in the most accurate GPS mode (Dual-Band) and up to 250 hours in "Tour" mode.
The Race 2 is close behind (55 hours in Dual-Band), which is still excellent, but the Vertical 2 squeezes out extra days for expeditions.
The 9 Peak Pro has great battery life for its size (40h GPS) but lacks the dual-band accuracy of the newer models.

3. Ergonomics & Flashlight
The Vertical 2 is a large, thick watch (49mm case) designed for gloves and harsh weather. It uniquely features a built-in LED flashlight (like the Garmin Fenix 7X), which is incredibly useful for camping.
The Race 2 features a Digital Crown (a rotating dial) for navigating menus, which many runners find faster than buttons. It lacks the dedicated flashlight.
The 9 Peak Pro is tiny in comparison. It is one of the thinnest GPS watches on the market (10.8mm thick), making it the only option here that fits comfortably under a tight dress shirt or wetsuit.

4. GPS Accuracy
Both the Vertical 2 and Race 2 use Dual-Band GNSS (L1 + L5), which provides superior accuracy in deep forests or cities with tall buildings.
The 9 Peak Pro uses a standard Single-Band Sony chip. It is accurate enough for most users but will struggle more in difficult terrain compared to the newer siblings.

Kardena smartwatches

The Kardena® CARE Pro 4 Plus is a German-engineered health smartwatch distinguished by its comprehensive medical sensors and AI-powered analysis. It targets users who need detailed health monitoring (e.g., seniors or those with cardiac concerns) rather than just fitness tracking.

1768673622382.png

What's Special About It?

  1. Medical-Grade Sensors (OSRAM):
Unlike standard fitness trackers, it uses specialized multi-wavelength sensors from the German company OSRAM. These sensors utilize 7-fold Fresnel lenses to analyze blood flow more deeply (up to the 7th skin layer) for higher accuracy in vital signs.
  2. Advanced "Micro-Body Scan":
It features a capability to perform a micro-physical examination, assessing complex metrics like:
    • Body Composition: Forecasting lipid (fat) and uric acid levels.
    • Heart Health: Measuring ECG (512Hz sampling), HRV (Heart Rate Variability), and detecting arrhythmia.
  3. Safety Features (SOS):
It includes a dedicated SOS function. In an emergency, a single button press alerts pre-set contacts, making it a safety device for independent living.
  4. Display & Build:
It features a large 2.04-inch AMOLED touchscreen (significantly larger and brighter than previous models) and is encased in a metal alloy frame with IP68 water resistance.

Key Specifications

  • Battery: 5-10 days (Active), wireless charging.
  • Health Metrics: Blood pressure, SpO2, Body Temp, Respiration Rate, Sleep Apnea detection.
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth calling (speaker/mic included) to answer calls directly on the watch.

GoodRAM / Wilk Electronik (Poland 🇵🇱)

GoodRAM is the largest manufacturer of memory and storage products within the European Union. It is a Polish brand manufactured by Wilk Elektronik SA, a company founded in 1991 and based in Łaziska Górne, Poland. They produce RAM memory modules, SSDs, hard drives, USB flash drives, and memory cards (including CompactFlash) for consumer, industrial, and server applications. The company launched the first RAM memory modules manufactured in Poland under the GoodRAM brand in 2003, and in 2009 established the first fully automated USB flash drive production line in this part of Europe. Their factory in Poland is equipped with advanced SMT lines, 400 testing platforms, and climate chambers, with production and assembly happening in Poland, though they likely use components from global suppliers.

Emtec (France 🇫🇷 )

EMTEC is a French company headquartered in Gennevilliers, France, part of the Dexxon Group, that evolved from BASF Magnetics and has manufactured magnetic tape products since the 1930s. Today they produce optical discs, USB flash drives, memory cards, and SSDs for the consumer market. While EMTEC has a long European manufacturing heritage (formerly operating plants in Germany and France for magnetic tape), current storage products are manufactured in Asia and not in Europe, though the brand maintains its French headquarters and European market presence.

Philips (Netherlands 🇳🇱)

Philips Media markets USB flash drives (USB 2.0, 3.0, and 3.1), SSDs, and SD/microSD memory cards under the Philips brand name. While the brand is associated with the Dutch electronics giant Philips, Philips Media storage products are not manufactured in Europe—like most flash storage brands, they are produced in Asia using standard flash memory components and then branded and distributed through Philips' European channels. The products are designed for consumer use with various capacities and form factors.

Intenso (Germany 🇩🇪)

Intenso sells a wide range of affordable storage media including external hard drives, SSDs, USB sticks, SD cards, and power banks. While headquartered in Vechta, Germany, the company primarily acts as a distributor that sources components and products from Asian OEM manufacturers, meaning their products are generally not manufactured in Europe, though some final assembly or packaging may occur locally.
