The index ranks countries by the proportion of people who have done one of the following in the past month:

  • Helped a stranger, or someone you didn't know who needed help
  • Donated money to charity
  • Volunteered your time to an organisation

Here is the Wikipedia page for more details. I am wondering about the quality of their methodology as I see that there are huge variations from one year to the next. For example the Czech Republic passed from 125th (one of the last in the world as there are only about 120 to 145 countries surveyed each year) in 2018 to 13th in 2022. If the index is meant to convey a sense of how altruistic and charitable people are in each country, why would it fluctuate so much within a few years when the people don't change (much)?

Czechia is not an exception either. Poland passed from 112th in 2022 to 16th in 2022. The Philippines have oscillated from 89th to 33rd, then 69th then 20th in those four years. Ghana jumped from 38th in 2019 to 6th in 2020 then fell back again to 46th in 2021. Most countries see huge fluctuations. This index is a joke.

Japan is second the last (118th out of 119) in 2022, even though the Japanese people are the most altruistic and kind people I have met in the world in average after visiting over 50 countries and meeting people from over 150 countries. Even though the ranking fluctuates, Japan is consistently among the worst country in the index!
