The world is constantly changing and evolving - sometimes faster than our mind can keep up with. Our worldview is heavily shaped by the type of news we follow, more even than our education. Unfortunately most people have a very distorted view of reality (in part due to the media), or have outdated information. Even people like me who love statistics and have made hundreds of maps about all facets of society in Europe and the USA still get things wrong when it comes to the developing world.

The site was founded by the Swedish academic Hans Rosling, known for his bestselling book Factfulness: Ten Reasons We're Wrong About the World – and Why Things Are Better Than You Think. He sadly died from cancer in 2017, but the Gapminder Foundation is now run by his son and his wife.
