Potsdam is Germany's Versailles. Located Southwest of Berlin it became the seat of the Hohenzollern family, rulers of Brandenburg, then Prussia, then the whole of Germany. The city was carpet bombed by the British just a few days before the end of World War II and further disfigured by the communist regime of the GDR. A citizen initiative managed to rebuild the historical centre to its former glory over the last 15 years. This video shows the transformation.
Another very beautiful German city that was also entirely rebuilt after the bombings of World War II was Dresden.
Many Polish cities have also rebuilt their historical centre to their historical glory. I visited Poland 2 years ago and witnessed first-hand the renovation of Poznan's market square.
