Belgium has recently raised the administrative cost of becoming a Belgian citizen from 150€ to 1,000€. There were even talks of raising it to 5, 000€, which would have made it the most expensive in the world. Here is a list of citizenship acquisition fees in various developed countries around the world, listed from highest to lowest. Becoming a citizen is free in only two of these countries: Luxembourg and Japan.

Fees outside the Eurozone were converted to euros using current April 2025 exchange rates.
