I was wondering how many people in the US and Canada were a regular cannabis user since weed was legalised. I was shocked to see how prevalent its usage was. Over one in five Americans and one in four Canadians have used cannabis at least once over the past year. That's by far the highest percentage in the developed world. The next highest percentage is New Zealand with 15%.
In Europe, the countries with the most users are Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Czechia and Croatia, each with about 10 to 11% of cannabis users. Even in Belgium, where it has long been decriminalised, and in Germany, where it is now legal, it's only popular with 7% of the population.
If you look at the breakdown by US state, in some states like Alaska, Oregon and Vermont, about 1/3 of the people consume weed at least once a year. Alabama is the state with the lowest percentage, but it's still 14% — higher than anywhere in Europe.
